Tyranid Alien theme paint scheme - WIP

So, one of my friend recently have a VERY tough 2016.  The loss of a very dear loved one and also welcome the birth of his first child!  With everything that has been going on, he has yet to make it back to the 40K in LONG time.  So, I took it upon myself to surprise him with a newly painted Tyranid Army!  Tricky part was getting the look right.  Going off of the toys we grew up, also using the later fan-art and trailer depictions - the Aliens had different color "hues".  Between the predominant blue, green, and even the Red from the ambient lighting - this is what inspired the current scheme you see down below.  In regular to low light, the color take a more transparent to blackened look vs. the full lighting you see in the photos.  Capture the full depth of the color was much trickier then taking the SM pictures we have up to this point.  If anyone wants the color scheme - please let me know and I'll post how I made them this way.  Enjoy!

  1. I saw a wonderful painting. I am a user who wants to start Tyranid. I like aliens and I want to paint Tyranid with that concept. I would like to know the paint and the method used when painting.

  2. Hi! And Welcome to the Blog :). I will try to make the step by step simple to follow. Do this:

    1. Prime the models - use a Black paint that is NOT shiny. Matte or not shiny Black paint. Example: https://www.walmart.com/ip/ColorPlace-Flat-Spray-Paint-Black/17011151

    2. Paint the entire model in "Vallejo Game Air - Gun Metal". Example: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MHWCTKI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    3. Paint the Bellies or underneath the models with "Badger Minitaire Ghost tint Midnight Blue". Example: https://www.amazon.com/Minitaire-Ghost-Tint-Midnight-Blue/dp/B00NPJ3WQ2/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1502883157&sr=1-1&keywords=badger+minitaire+midnight

    4. Now - you need to decide whether you want Blue, Green, or Red for your Tyranids. I did Blue for troops, Green for Heavy Support, Red for HQ, and Yellow for Fast attack. Those paints are the "Tamiya clear colors range". Examples:

    - Blue: https://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-Models-Acrylic-Paint-Clear/dp/B0099WQA36/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1502883316&sr=1-1&keywords=tamiya+paint+clear+blue

    -Green: https://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-Acrylic-Gloss-Clear-TAM81025/dp/B0006O525I/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1502883338&sr=1-1&keywords=tamiya+paint+clear+Green

    -Red: https://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-Acrylic-Gloss-Clear-TAM81027/dp/B00TT856HG/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1502883358&sr=1-1&keywords=tamiya+paint+clear+red

    -Yellow: https://www.amazon.com/TAMX24-81524-Acrylic-Clear-Yellow/dp/B0099WQBEE/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1502883380&sr=1-1&keywords=tamiya+paint+clear+yellow

    5. (LAST STEP). Only paint "Vallejo Game Air Silver" on the "Teeth, Horns, and Claws tips". Example: https://www.amazon.com/Vallejo-Game-Air-Silver-Paint/dp/B00MHWCR3C/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1502883438&sr=1-1&keywords=vallejo+game+air+silver.

I used both air brush for the entire model, but you can easily use a paint brush for it as well.

PRO TIP! If you have plastic sprue or a model you don't want to use - try these paints on it FIRST before you actually paint the models you want to play with. Good Luck and ask more questions if you need help!

  4. These look really great! Where did the alien-specific conversion bits come from? The Queen heads on the warriors are spectacular. The scale is almost perfect.

  5. Good Morning!

So, not gonna lie - this conversions are not cheap! that's why you see so few of them in the army. Did the couple as accents. I used the heads from the "AvP: The Hunt" board game.

I wish I had better news, but these guys don't bitz their models out like 40K/Ebay. The motif I did for this army was because my friend needed something to look forward to during a dark time. The results speak for themselves and was happy it worked out as well as it did. Thank you fro stopping by.

    1. Yowza! You weren't kidding... I suspected that's where the bits came from, but thank you very much for the information. This work is inspiring regardless. I am thinking I want to do my Tyranid force in a similar Alien-theme.

  6. Coming to the party a bit late... about to apply something very similar to my space hulk stealers but had couple of questions about the steps. Sounds like you did all the layers (except for teeth/details) with an airbrush - so there is no edge highlighting with silver before the clear gloss? Just curious, as there are a couple of shots where there is a high contrast with the recesses. Or possibly you have put the gloss on thicker with a brush so it acts a bit like a wash? The shots of the back of the Mawloc in particular look like you've almost done a zenithal highlight of silver before the green...
